Conference Championship Games and Playoff Qualification

Discussion

The premise for this first paragraph is Alabama should've been ranked in the top 10 before the championship game.

Alabama shouldn't miss the playoffs for losing the championship game. I don't care if a team loses by 100. They earned their spot in the game and it would be farcical for them to be kicked out of a playoff spot because of the game while Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas A&M get in without having to play in it. It would disincentivise teams from playing in it at all. If a team is not in a playoff spot before their championship game though, then they should miss out if they lose it. So with this premise, BYU should be out while Alabama should be in.

However, Alabama shouldn't have made the playoffs. The problem is they didn't deserve a top 10 spot before the championship game. They have by far the worst loss out of BYU, Miami, ND. Losing by two touchdowns to FSU who didn't even make a bowl and lost to Florida and Stanford. They also had close wins against bad SEC teams whereas Miami and ND blew out most of their opponents. Miami's losses also aren't great which should have them below BYU but above ND due to the head-to-head win. BYU should clear these teams due to going 11-1 and having wins against ranked Utah and Arizona. They only had a close game against one bad team: Colorado.

The rankings should've been 9. BYU 10. Miami 11. ND 12. Alabama. Then if Alabama wins their championship game, they get in and knock Miami out. It would be Miami's fault for missing the ACC championship game.
