LXC vs VM performance for 4K UHD
So, I've had a Plex LXC container running for about a year via Proxmox and for the most part it's been rock solid.
Recently I wanted to push my low power server a little bit more and start downloading 4K UHD rips of films that are known to be fantastic conversions to 4K
The moment I did this, my LXC container was crashing in about 20 to 30 minutes and I went through adjusting the swap and the RAM and the mount changing it from CIFS to NAS and none of it really did anything.
So I asked ChatGPT what could be the problem and it helpfully suggested that because I'm running this on Proxmox, a container shares its kernel space and resources with the host, whereas a VM is completely walled off and independent so its own resources are managed by its own kernel. I had no idea that was the distinction, I thought a container was a stripped down environment much like a docker container but didn't realise it would share it's resources so differently.
So I restored my Plex backup to the VM, added an SSD for transcoding and it runs like a dream.
- 4 cores
- 8GB RAM
- 2GB Swap
-120GB transcode SSD
I had the parts all along. So if anyone else is struggling thinking their hardware isn't good enough, it could just be the setup needs tweaking!
