Controller support through steam controller maping on the Mac version of the game?

I got the game on my Mac and it runs great. The only problem is when I launch it through steam to use a controller layout nothing responds in game. I can see through steam overlay my controller inputs are being recognized but nothing happens in game. Thanks for any help
