Please explain the purpose of "losing trend"

I've had a really terrible loss streak today, and I am curious to understand what the possible purpose for "losing trend" is. So like I'm already having a terrible time, and I lose even more rank because I've lost X number of games in a row? What lol? Am I crazy?
