Why did he agree to being exclusive then say there is no romantic connection?

I’m having trouble making sense of what happened between me (25F) and a guy (28M) I’d been seeing from a dating app. We talked for a little over two months, had great chemistry, banter, and were hanging out 1–2x a week. I did notice I initiated plans more than he did, but overall things felt easy and fun.

When I traveled out of state for a week, I noticed he had unmatched me and updated his dating profile. When I confronted him, he said it was an accident, reassured me that he was genuinely focused on me, and we decided to be exclusive.

The next time we hung out, everything was great until I casually asked if he wanted to do something with my sister and her partner. He immediately got weird and said he didn’t want us meeting each other’s people until we were “official,” but also wasn’t ready for labels yet. He said it was “a him thing, not a me thing.” I ended up crying (I was tipsy and just thrown off). The next morning he texted dryly and said not to worry about it. I told him I needed clarity, and we agreed to talk next time we saw each other.

When we sat down to talk, he said he wasn’t ready to commit, needed more time, and didn’t think I’d ever fully get over the profile incident. I teared up again, and the conversation shifted into him ending things entirely. He told me I was “insanely attracted” to me but he didn’t feel a romantic connection. When I asked for closure the next day, he added to his reasoning again—now saying we had personality differences, he didn’t see marriage with me, and we were “just different people.” He said he didnt like us arguing - but to me we were never arguing, I thought we were communicating.

It feels so sudden and confusing, especially because he had just told me he was focused on me and wanted exclusivity. I really liked him, and I can’t help but wonder if my emotional reactions affected things, even though he said they didn’t. I do have trouble with anxious attatchment.

My question is: Given the inconsistencies and sudden shift, does this seem like he was never truly invested? Or am I missing something that could explain his behavior? I feel like I ruined it. But I know, in the grand scheme of things, I will get over it and find someone for me. Just having trouble right now.
