The Projection in the Ex-Christian Subreddit is Beyond Satire
I was raised very evangelical Christian and was a young earth creationist as a kid. I'm not really religious anymore. But I want you all to know the ex-christian subreddit is filled with people who are deeply mentally unwell and project on to Christians their own mental issues. They think Christians are irrational while being irrational, they think religion is a mental illness when the rates of mental illness amongst those on the subreddit are on their face astoundingly high.
I was reading on there about the Samantha Fulnecky thing in Oklahoma. People were all over there making fun of it and acting like she's some brain washed idiot. I'm a grad student at an elite secular research university in the US known for its leftist culture. I've graded many papers and I showed Fulnecky's paper and the rubric to my other grad student friends who have likely collectively graded many thousands of papers over the years. We all agreed that the paper was absolutely fine and clearly deserved a good grade. The people on the ex-Christian sub were making fun of it for not following the rubric, for not citing or quoting, or engaging with the paper, or for other things. But the thing is it does engage with the paper, and there's no requirement in the rubric to cite or quote anything. The only things she did in the paper that warrant being marked down for are grammar and spelling errors. Is it the paper I would have turned in? No. But it clearly meant the requirement and if the instructors didn't like the paper they should have anticipated something like this would have happened and written a better rubric.
Yet for saying this obvious fact I was banned and my comments were removed. I even messaged the mods who responded by saying I was "trying to stir up trouble" and appeal to my own authority. So essentially when I disagree with the arguments people made by appealing to their own authority by pointing to my experience in my successful secular academic career, they view it as stirring up trouble. There are countless posts and comments on that sub about Christians not being able to handle criticism, and yet when someone simply disagrees with their view of how a college paper should be graded, they can't handle basic disagreement even when coming from actual people with experience grading college papers at elite secular research universities. The mod who spoke to me via DM even said "I don't give a shit what she said in her paper" and accused me of throwing a tantrum, which I found very funny because I simply asked why I was banned for simply disagreeing and they proceeded to throw an unhinged tantrum. I'm honestly laughing as I write this because of how stereotypical their behavior was.
So just be aware, when ex-Christians on subreddits like that accuse you guys of being soft, stupid, uneducated, mentally ill, etc, just know they're projecting onto you their own behaviors. Are there dumb Christians? Absolutely. But ex-Christians are just as stupid. And they're obviously plagued by mental illness and are simply unable to handle it when someone who believes the universe is 14 billion years old and evolution occurs points out their own illogical viewpoints.
The fact so many of them on the subreddit aren't just people who left Christianity to become atheists, but are people who became "pagans" (as if the "paganism" they practice isn't just dressing up and acting goofy while pretending to be in religions that haven't existed in over a 1,000 years and would be horrified and throwing up if they ever saw what the actual ancient pagans did and believed) or join Satanism (which is just a subconscious dogwhistle for saying I'm on the spectrum and don't have basic social skills and I need my hatred for my family for making me spend an hour every Sunday not watching tv to be my entire personality) really shows they're deeply mentally unwell people who probably need to be on SSRIs. Many people stop being religious, but actual normal people just stop going to church and are happy to be around Christians and don't have a psychological hole they fill with hatred and wanting to make their families uncomfortable their whole personalities.
You guys are so much more pleasant than those unstable weirdos who need lots of therapy and antidepressants.
