Thoughts on princess–knight forbidden romance in fantasy?

I’m curious how fantasy readers feel about this trope. I’m writing a story where a princess is promised to a prince for political reasons… but starts forming a very slow-burn, forbidden connection with her appointed knight. There’s court politics, secrets, a harsh queen, and a past tragedy involving another princess/knight pairing that ended badly.

Do you LIKE this trope? Hate it? What makes forbidden royal romance work (or not work) for you?
