Coal ore thing

Something I have noticed while playing Minecraft survival for the first time in a few years, is something I feel is off about coal.

I have played both Java and Bedrock recently and have seen the same thing.

Coal ore only dropping one piece of coal.

I swear in the old days it used to drop several like red stone, lapis, and copper. Am I misremembering or was there an update note I missed?

(Also, I hope the right flair was used. I deliberated over whether or not I should put “discussion” or “help”.)
