Why have fiction audiences gotten more shallow?

I notice it a lot now how people more focus on power scaling and other kind of nonsense that moreso feels like they barely acknowledge the story. Similar with the hyper-aggression towards self insertion, people seem to loathe it over the most basic “I see myself in this character” comments.

What changed that made modern audiences become like this?
