Dog owners, I feel guilty and need advice
I have acquired 4 dogs and 2 cats at the age of 21. I was independent at 18 and got two tiny 4 lb chihuahuas within a year. They are very easy, great dogs. A year later at 19 I found a small 15 lb dog being chased by a homeless person. I was living in a 3rd floor apartment with no elevator but decided to keep him because he’s amazing and I couldn’t stand to take him to a shelter.
It was a lot with 3 dogs, so I moved to the country pretty isolated from everything so I could get them a big yard and the people out there are not as strict on pets. About 6 month after I moved to the country, when I was 20, a German shepherd who was hit by a car came up to my doorstep. My vet and I worked together and saved his life. I feel like we were meant to be and I am committed to him.
6 months later I left the country and moved back with my mom into an trailer/adu on her property because I was getting extremely depressed living out there so isolated. My 15 lb boy pretty much sleeps at my mom’s house full time at this point. He has her dogs for company and my mom has a very large backyard. The only issue is my mom tends to over feed her 2 dogs, 1 small and 1 large, and doesn’t walk them daily. She does have a dog walker for the older, larger dog.
I would be moving close by. I feel like leaving my 15 lb dog at my mom’s place may be a good option. I’m consumed with guilt about it though. I know I took the responsibility for him by keeping him when I found him. Finding a place to rent with 3 dogs and 2 cats is tough, especially when one is a German shepherd. 4 dogs and 2 cats seems almost impossible. I would be able to come by very often and bring him and my mom’s little dog on walks and have him over half the time.
I just don’t know what to do. I can’t keep living in a trailer in my mom’s yard anymore. I have money to move out but i keep weighing my options. I know he would probably be perfectly happy but I still feel like I kind of failed him. I would be buying a house in the next few years and would love to take him back them. I just don’t know what to do or think. Please if anyone has gone through something similar please let me know.
