Should I relocate for a higher paying and better titled position?
I (27M) am feeling a bit conflicted about a new career opportunity. I’ve been working for two years as a Legal Assistant for a local government law department, but during that time my role has evolved into that of an in-house Legal Technologist.
I was sent to a Legal Tech conference last month and ended up getting recruited by another organization for an actual Legal Technologist position they had just recently begun accepting applications for. I interviewed, and they extended me an offer that would amount in a 55% salary increase (47k to 74k).
My current role is about as dead end as it gets, and while I wanted to make the attempt to get my position reclassified into something more aligned with my actual duties, there’s no way that I’d get anything close to what the new job is offering due to budgetary constraints and internal equity (74k is higher than what our attorneys currently start out at).
Pros are the new salary and title, as this would put me on a professional track and open up the door to Legal Ops/Legal Tech roles down the road.
The biggest hurdle for me would be the actual relocation. It’d be a big move (L-MCOL East Coast city to L-MCOL Midwest city). A part of me feels like this isn’t worth it even with the big pay bump. I obviously will never be able to make this much at my current employer, and with the job market being as volatile as it is opportunities like this are not that abundant. And even if the market were more stable, Legal Tech is very niche, so law firms/departments in my area might not even have a need for this type of role. I’m just not sure if it’s worth upending my life and leaving my family and friends for.
The upside is that they would let me work remotely from my current state until the end of my lease and assist with relocation. Still, I’m not sure if any of this would be worth the hassle.
