The NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator is a free national tool that helps families find life insurance policies or annuities they suspect exist but can’t locate after a loved one dies. It exists because it is very common for policies to go unclaimed when families either never knew a policy existed or can’t find the paperwork.

What the NAIC Policy Locator is

The Policy Locator is an online service run by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the organization that supports state insurance regulators in overseeing the insurance industry and protecting consumers. Through a secure portal, insurers compare your request (the deceased’s name, date of birth, date of death, Social Security number, and your relationship) against their records and contact you directly if a matching policy or annuity is found and you are a beneficiary.

How often families “lose” policies

Regulators and the NAIC note that every year millions of dollars in life insurance benefits are never claimed because beneficiaries cannot find the policy or don’t even know one exists. Since the locator launched nationwide in 2016, it has processed roughly 886,000+ search requests and helped connect consumers with more than 10 billion dollars in life insurance and annuity benefits that might otherwise have remained unclaimed, which shows how widespread the problem of “lost” or unknown policies is.

Why policies go missing

Families often misplace paperwork, the insured may never have told loved ones about the policy, or the insurer may have changed names or merged, making the original documents hard to match to a current company. In other cases, beneficiaries know a policy exists but lack key details like the company name or policy number, and the locator gives them a structured way to search across many participating insurers at once.

Why the locator matters for families

Because the service is free, secure, and accepted by regulators nationwide, it has become a standard recommendation from state insurance departments, attorneys, and financial planners when families are settling an estate. For many households, especially those relying on life insurance to cover debts or replace income, recovering a policy through the locator can be the difference between major financial strain and a more stable transition after a loss.
