Why do people struggle so much when coming up with a balance solution for Sniper?

Discussion

What is it exactly that the subreddit (and the community as a whole) are struggling to understand when it comes to balancing Sniper?

It's as simple as adding a "Sniper!" voice command to replace one of the 2 "Pass to me!" slots for Mannpower and PASS Time, and give dual-functionality to the remaining "Pass to me!" command for both modes. I don't see the community's ideal of giving Sniper the laser from MvM or the nerfs to his ammo count logistically working out in the slightest.

I can tell you from someone who's played with the proposed nerfs for Sniper on FishOnAStick's Bad Weapon Academy servers and TC2 (Typical Colors 2, a Roblox TF2 re-envisioning), that it is the most unintuitive and poorly executed nerf for a class I've experienced playing with.

Hitting headshots feels just as punishing as missing them, you're so sluggish to the point where all secondaries but the SMG feel like direct downgrades unless you're using the Huntsman. It makes Sniper even less engaging than he currently is, making him boring for people already good at the class and needlessly steepening the skill curve for newer players.

It doesn't make the game more fun or casual, it doesn't nerf quickscoping nor the people using it: It makes the game more DM-Based and brainless. This is a sentiment shared with the Gas Passer in MvM, but even that has a logical defense for its use; Nerfing Sniper does not.

I think a lot of this rhetoric against Sniper is also a byproduct of people just parroting what their favorite TF2tubers say, which is only amplified by the fact that the pool of content creators for TF2 are such a small handful, that they're all in the same friendgroup and spread the exact same sentiment to their viewers. So instead of people proposing additions to the game to increase player retention when fighting against Sniper, we get a bunch of armchair developers talking about things that need to be removed for balance.

You may rebuttal with the Demoman being nerfed to have only 4 grenades, the Pyro being given Airblast, the Engineer being able to pick up buildings, etc. But do you know what the difference between those changes and the "Nerf Sniper!" sentiment of modern day is? Those were additions; things that increased enjoyment alongside the base game, not replacements. Excluding the Demoman's Grenade clip, which happened in the September Public Beta of 2007, before the game even officially released. (You could say I'm using strawman fallacy here, but this is an actual piece of rebuttal towards Sniper defenders, see: [TF2: "Nerf Sniper because i'm bad!" Addendum] by Gabber (TW: Strong language I guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯)

I see people often pointing to Shounic's videos on expirementing with the removal of Sniper; to which I respond with the facts: a YouTuber's fan base is not representative of the general playerbase, it is the vocal minority. Shounic's videos are also heavily influenced by him and he actively incentivizes players to use strats he comes up with for the specific map pool in the videos, prior to putting the server online

Balancing the game around YouTubers is the exact same mistake that Valve made when balancing the game around Competitive players. TF2tubers represent less than 5% of the player base, listening to them would be Meet your Match all over again; This is why Valve has playtesters.

Something I've noticed between people that share my opinion on a dedicated "Sniper!" Voiceline, is confusion on the feasibility of it. With people creating unnecessary fan-made voicelines in the vain of the Medic and Spy voicelines. While I hate to push against the addition of community made content, I'd genuinely lose my mind having to listen to the out of character writing and poor impersonations of VSH in the base game.

Lines for calling out Sniper already exist for Medic, Heavy, Engineer, and Soldier in MvM; where they simply yell "Sniper!". Nothing fancy or out of character, and I highly doubt it would cost Valve even a few thousand dollars to get the remaining actors for the few classes who didn't get Sniper lines. If Valve wanted to be consistent, then they'd ideally just have each of the mercenaries have 1 specific voiceline for Sniper and no more.

All this to mention that the addition of a "Sniper!" Callout would round out the voicelines for all support classes, making it clearly identifiable to new players the importance of key picks and giving the regular player base

This is just me ranting and beating a dead horse to death, but I feel the community needs to hear it, in the sea of people hating Sniper without giving any effective or good solutions to the issues of the class.
