Does the PetiteKnit women's zipper sweater light really need a minimum 650g yarn??

I've made full length sweaters with only 400-450g of DK yarn, so the 650g minimum seems a bit much, especially because the photos on the website don't look too oversized either. I'm assuming it also probably depends on my gauge, but I am planning on making the smallest size. Would I need to adjust the pattern to make it a custom fit?
