What do you think of the use of gore to scare the reader in horror writing?

This is just my opinion and you all have the right to disagree with me, but I feel like there shouldn't be any sort of limit on how much gore you can add to a book as long as you use other methods of scaring the reader and/or it isn't "meaningless." (An example of "meaningful" gore would be brutally killing one of the main characters a decent amount of the way into the book and prior to that getting the reader really attached to that character. Another example would be having a lot of build up like characters vaguely talking about how some other character was murdered throughout much of the book before finally going into great detail on how they were actually killed. Of course, these 2 examples won't always work but you get the point).
