Mid-MS2; switching into ophtho?

📚 Preclinical

Hi all, I'm an MS2 at a mid-tier USMD who has in the past been interested and involved with urology. However, I have started to explore the option of ophtho based on the lifestyle, patient interaction and QoL improvement, shorter and less brutal residency, and the fact that it maintains many of the cool things I liked about urology, namely quicker procedures and innovative technology.

Worries: I am someone who loves physiology and worried if ophtho will provide a chance to engage with that. I am also worried about the current job market and reduction in compensation recently, especially given that I want to work on the East Coast.

I have two questions:

  1. Does optho seem right for me? Is the day to day of a procedural specialtycerebral enough to scratch the physiology/thinking itch? And regards to the other characteristics (WLB, technology, clinic) does ophtho fulfill those criteria? Any clarification on the job market and day to day would also be greatly appreciated.

  2. Given how competitive ophtho is getting nowadays, what would my steps be to pivoting? I don't want to burn any bridges in transitioning over but want to start getting involved with research. Is it even feasible to expect that I will match decently (ideally to a bigger city) given how "late" I am starting? How important is specialty-specific research for ophtho?

Thank you!
