Just watched Ares last night...

I liked it. Solid addition to the franchise. I was wondering what the general direction of the movie as a whole was going to be, and I'm glad it was at least focused. Overall I thought the writing was pretty good with a few exceptions. I enjoyed the direction it intends/intended to take the franchise, but feel like there could have been a better effort to take the movie from "good to great".

All in all - Doesn't deserve the hate it's gotten, and holds solid re-watch value. I'm more content with purchasing Ares than I was after buying the new Superman movie.
