Poop Withholdings Tips / Success Stories Needed
Sorry in advance for a long post - but some back story might help.
My ask : Poop withholding success stories. Medication, suppositories, creative things. My husband needs some convincng that this is in fact a big deal and medications are likely needed.
Our Backstory: We attempted potty training with our then 23 month old boy becuase he was showing all the signs. He'd watch us go, tell us when he was peeing in the diaper, went outside a few times etc. So we tried to take the long labor day weekend and start. Trying to keep some details short - he definitely is a poop withholder. He didnt go poop for the 5 days. By day 5 he was antsy, fussy, tooting, clearly had to go but by this point was having a total freak out if we even mentioned potty. He certainly wasnt going to sit long enough to have a poop! He was having some pee push back at this point too. He had multiple pee successes but now that he was cranky and anxious about the poop, he began to hold his pee too, he was beside himself and the whole experience was becoming terrible. He held his pee for 6+ hours on this 5th day and even refused fluids because he knew itd make him have to pee. We were doing oh crap method at this point, so I went all in and bought her poop solutions course which involves some medication - leaning heavy on glycerin suppositories to help the kiddos have no choice but to go- hopefully reversing the holding. I am a nurse so I'm not freaked out about administering them, but i do hate that that feels so extreme! Is that really the solution? :( My husband certainly has strong feelings against that. He thought i was crazy when I said that's what we should try. He thinks its invasive and is only going to make things scarier for him. I however finally convinved him to let me try one and the administration went *okay*. I tried to be quick , he cried of course, like what the heck mom?! And then after all of that, he still didn't go!! He was so tightened up after 5 days of not going. I wanted to try another one, according to her protocol, by my husband was like absolutely not. It's extreme and it didnt even work. He thinks things will just work themselves out (the eternal chill, optomist) and that my anxiety about everything was contributing too. We decided to put a pull up on and go to the park just for a family reset. Of course, as soon as pull up was on , massive poop at the park... my husband thinks thats fine. and we can just move forward with it being "fine" that he might need a diaper to poop for a bit longer.... But on top of all the behavior issues, pee withholding too, we decided to take a break. He was in no way ready to go back to daycare the next day so we decided to just pause it with this plan in our heads that we would start again over christmas break. We will have 14 days off daycare.
Fast forward to our current state: Kind of naturally, unintentionally, we have done some hybrid potty training. On the weekends, or in the evening we'll let him run around bottomless and slowly over the last month or so it has become where he will tell us when he has to go! Or if its been like an hour and i know he drank fluids, ill prompt him. Sometimes he still doesnt want to go, or he'll sit and not be able to go, or he will only want to sit for like 3 seconds and want down....but then he'll still hold it and be open to us prompting him agian 20 mins later or something. We're lucky in the fact that he is one of the camel kids who can hold it. However, when we let him have pants on but no diaper, he is 50/50. Sometimes he'll stop and tell us, sometimes he starts to tinkle in his pants, stops and looks at us, and then will go to at least try and finish on the potty. All in all - considering we're not all in with it, i am pretty happy with how pee potty training is going. We havent advanced to trying it out of the house, at daycare etc. Still no pressure on the poops, but when we have a 3 day bottomless weekend - sure enough he doesnt go for those 3 days. First day back at daycare on a monday, and he'll have a big poop....
When we start back up over christmas break - i want to have a plan for the poop and I think it may be that we have to do mild mirilax, increase fat and fiber in diet, and then also do suppositories if its been more than 2 or 3 days? I want this to be as non traumatic as possible but also we have to move forward with results. I dont want to continue to do this half and half potty training. Fully expecting there will be accidents and some poop issues for many months I am sure - but we need some poop wins in the potty!!!
For those with poop withholders - if supps are the answer i would like to hear success stories to tell my husband. How long did you have to do them for before they were pooping on their own? Do they evantually take the supps pretty easy? Or is it a scary fight every time? Any other ideas of things we can do or try that arent medication too? I know all the blowing bubbles, pin wheels things etc but thats def not enough. He is wound tight about poop, and if I ask him to go, he;s just immediately mad and wants off. I know everything feels more intense when its your kid but i would definitley consider him a moderate if not close to severe withholder.... all advice appreciated!!
