I was yelled at because I’m quiet

Workplace Issue

I’m a pretty quiet person and I usually keep to myself. I’m like this at work and when I’m with friends or family. I’m just a naturally private person and everyone knows that. I like to my work life separate from my personal life. I don’t care for small talk either, so I really only talk to my coworkers if it’s work related. We don’t even have much at all in common to talk that often. I don’t see the need to converse about our personal life for 40 hours a week. We’re not at work to make friends to fulfill some emotional connection/need with others because we’re missing that outside of work.

Recently, my boss and coworker yelled at me basically because I’m not talking to anyone in the office. (There isn’t anything work related that warrants a conversation.) My coworker tried to back up her point by saying I have an attitude, people are struggling to approach me, I’m miserable and I need to find a new job. My boss even agreed that if myself or any of my other coworkers are unhappy we should find a new place to work. Every time I spoke up I was shot down and interrupted, so I gathered my things and left for the day.

My boss wants to have a conversation with me about the situation. I will be expressing to him how inappropriate the situation was as well as some other concerns. Issues regarding the way she speaks to others and bossing them around have already been brought to his attention and he hasn’t done anything. I’m not willing to accept either of their apologies if they do give me one because they’re over 40, so you’d think they’d know better. I’m also not willing to have a conversation with her at all, so I will be referring her to my email. If coworkers were bringing concerns about me to his attention, he should have spoken with me privately. I feel like I’ve been targeted and attacked for no reason.

I’d like to file a complaint with HR as I feel that this falls into a hostile work environment situation. But at the same time, I’m unsure of how things will go as she knows people in the HR department and I don’t know how the office dynamic will be if I do decide to do that. Part of me wants to see how the conversation with my boss goes first and then decide if I want to go to HR or not. While the other part of me wants to go to HR AND have a conversation with him. I just feel like something should be don’t about her behavior but I don’t wanna fuck things up at work.

Has anyone experienced something like this? If so, what did you do?
