How much power does a surname hold today?

In countries like India and Nepal, a person’s last name can often hint at their caste or community. I find it fascinating (and a bit unsettling) how a single surname can carry so much history, identity, and sometimes bias.

Do people still judge or treat others differently based on their surnames?

Is this something you’ve personally noticed, or is it becoming less relevant with newer generations?
