Roommate used my broken toilet for four days.

WARNING - Gross

This happened a few years ago but it still haunts me. I was living with my best friend of ten years who had recently bought a house, I'll call her Emily. I was just out of grad school and she very kindly let me stay with her rent free while I looked for somewhere permanent, as long as I paid utilities and helped fix up the house. I only planned to stay there a couple of months, but I ended up living there for six months and it was one of the most difficult periods of my life. It became clear very quickly that I had made a huge mistake moving in with my best friend.

For some context, Emily has some serious fibromyalgia. I saw her really struggle with pain through high school, I remember the day she finally got her diagnosis, and I was there as her illness got progressively worse over the years. I did my very best to be a supportive friend to her, especially when she gave me a place to live. At the time, she wasn't working as her health had gotten pretty bad, and I wasn't working since I was just out of grad school, so we were spending a lot of time together. Luckily though, with the way Emily's house was designed, it had two separate upstairs areas. I basically had my own little apartment with a bedroom, bathroom, and small living area to myself, so I could get a little alone time if I wanted.

At one point during my stay at Emily's, my grandmother ended up in the hospital. We were about a three hour drive from my family, so I planned to go home to see my grandma for four days. Emily had been complaining about having to share a space with her boyfriend all the time, so I offered her my apartment while I was gone. I figured she could decompress while watching my cat, which she was going to do anyway.

The day I left for my trip, I was all ready to walk out the door, car was packed and everything. I just had to pee before leaving. When I go to flush the toilet, it doesn't flush. I know basic toilet mechanics, so I opened up the lid to see what was wrong, but I saw a contraption I had never seen before in my life. I had no idea how to fix this toilet. I apologized to Emily and told her her boyfriend was going to have to take a look at it when he got home. She understood, so I left for my trip.

Four days later, after a stressful trip seeing my sick grandma, I come home and walk up to my apartment. Emily is walking down the stairs and very cheerfully welcomes me home like everything is normal. I finish unpacking my car and go to use the bathroom, when I opened the toilet, I was so shocked I immediately slammed it shut.

This is one of those toilets that only fills with a little bit of water. But now, it was filled, almost to the brim, with piss and shit. Four days worth. It smelled like a latrine. She had been using a broken toilet for four days in a house that had two functioning toilets. She genuinely had no excuse. Of course, going up and down the stairs to use the working bathroom would've been difficult for her with her health issues, but if she insisted on staying in my apartment, why didn't she have her boyfriend fix it? Why didn't she decide it wasn't a good time to stay in my apartment? Why didn't he insist on fixing it before she used it for four days? Emily and I hadn't even started fighting at that point, and she was really excited to be staying in my apartment, so I dont think she was upset with me over anything. So many questions for both of them, but sadly I will never know why she filled my toilet with shit because I was too mortified to confront her about it.

To top it all off, I had barely calmed down when I got a text from Emily's boyfriend. He sent me the number to call toilet customer service. Fucking toilet customer service. I refused to call, and offered to just pay them for parts or whatever because I was not touching that toilet until it was working again. Thankfully they didn't ask for money but he didn't even fix it right away. Me and my IBS had to run downstairs every time I needed the bathroom for two days.

Believe it or not this wasn't even the worst thing she did while I lived with her, but it was definitely the nastiest. My cat even seemed to hate her after this. Needless to say we are no longer roommates or friends.
