Tacoma or F‑150 --- Which truck won’t make me regret my first adult purchase?
Hi, I've been going back and forth for a few months on purchase of a used F-150 or Tacoma. I will only have this truck for about 5 years until my employer will provide a vehicle.
- Ford F‑150 (XLT and Up) - (2017+)
- Toyota Tacoma (TRD Off-Road Preferred) - (2016+)
Budget: ~$25k
Must-haves: 4WD, 4 doors, 4 full seats. I’m 6’3”, so space/comfort is a factor. Won’t be towing - mostly daily driving, trips to the mountain during ski season and hauling dirt bikes in the summer.
Why I’m leaning toward each:
F‑150:
- Tons of interior and cab/bed space — I’m tall, so the extra room is nice.
- Looks like a better value for the money - could save a few grand vs a Tacoma of similar year/miles.
- V6/EcoBoost MPG is surprisingly better than the Tacoma's V6 MPG.
Tacoma TRD Off-Road:
- Toyota reliability - low maintenance costs over time.
- TRD Off-Road is the exact trim I want, but open to any 4WD models.
- Resale value usually holds up well, but I would spend at least a few grand more up front.
- My first truck out of high school was an ‘86 Toyota pickup. I could fix anything on it, and it ran to 250k miles before I sold it. Loved that reliability, but it was small... I also want something modern and comfortable.
Sticking Points:
- I value comfort and space, but Tacoma’s reliability and off-road abilities is tempting.
- Don’t want to feel cramped, but I also don’t really need a full-size truck for what I’ll do.
Questions:
- Did the Tacoma feel cramped compared to a full-size like the F‑150?
- For daily driving/light hauling, would you pick one over the other again?
- Any big maintenance surprises with the F‑150?
- Did you actually use the extra space of the F‑150, or was it mostly overkill?
Leaning toward the F‑150 for space, comfort, and value, but open to being convinced otherwise if anyone has experience with either or both.
