[Suggestion] Death Knights desperately need real runeblades - and Blizzard already has the perfect precedent. Frostmourne remains the ONLY major lore weapon with zero cosmetic presence.

Discussion

This will be a LONG post and I do apologize.

TL;DR

Every iconic Warcraft weapon is obtainable in some form—except Frostmourne. Death Knights still have no proper 2H runeblade cosmetic, even though Blizzard clearly can make them. We just want a modern runeblade that fits the class fantasy.

Death Knights have one of the most recognizable class fantasies in Warcraft:

The Runeblade. Domination magic. Soul-stealing frost. Necromantic steel. Yet ironically, DKs are the only class in the entire game whose most iconic weapons have no obtainable variant, no illusion, and no modern cosmetic representation.

This is especially strange because Blizzard has consistently given players access to the most iconic lore weapons in the franchise - except the ones tied to Death Knights.

Let’s look at the precedent.

Nearly every major Warcraft weapon is obtainable in some form

Here’s a short list of canon, lore-heavy, extremely important weapons that players can get:

  • Ashbringer (Artifact weapon)

  • Corrupted Ashbringer (Vanilla/TBC epic from Naxxramas)

  • Doomhammer (Artifact weapon)

  • Atiesh (Vanilla/TBC legendary from Naxxramas)

  • Twin Blades of Azzinoth (TBC legendary from the Black Temple)

  • Quel'Delar (Quest from WotLK epic dungeons "Battered Hilt")

  • Quel'Serrar (Quest from Dire Maul "Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying")

  • Gorehowl (Multiple variants available in Hellfire Peninsula, Karazhan and Dawn of the Infinite)

  • Shalamayne (Legion Remix)

  • Broxigar’s Axe of Cenarius (in-game as Betrayer of Humanity)

  • Seetheras, Broadsword of the Sunderer (Sargeras’ sword, briefly available via the Trading Post)

  • Shadowmourne (Legendary questline in Icecrown Citadel)

  • Almost every Artifact weapon from Legion

Blizzard even lets players obtain weapons belonging to:

  • World-shattering Titans

  • Faction leaders

  • Demigods

  • Characters who are still alive

  • Weapons used in current-expansion cinematics

The pattern is extremely consistent:

If a weapon is iconic, Blizzard usually gives players a version - even multiple variants.

But there is one gigantic exception.

The Frostmourne Problem

Frostmourne is:

  • One of the most recognizable fantasy weapons in gaming

  • The literal foundation of Death Knight identity

  • Central to four expansions' worth of lore

  • Shown in multiple cinematics with updated HD models

  • The weapon whose SHARDS were used to forge DK artifacts (Apocalypse, Maw of the Damned, Blades of the Fallen Prince)

Yet DK players today get:

❌ No Frostmourne transmog

❌ No cosmetic variant

❌ No “echo” or reforged 2H runeblade

❌ A 5-minute Frostmourne buff once a year

❌ Runeforging visuals that haven’t been updated since Wrath

❌ Zero class-specific runeblade cosmetics

❌ No soul-stealing illusion, despite Shadowmourne proving it’s possible

Frostmourne is the only major lore weapon in WoW history that:

  • Has an HD model

  • Appears constantly

  • Is tied directly to a playable class

  • Has player-forged derivatives

  • But has no usable OR cosmetic version for players.

This is the heart of the issue.

Runeblades in general are underdeveloped - and the 1H attempts miss the mark

Blizzard has created several weapons that almost look like runeblades, but they suffer from critical issues that break the DK fantasy.

❌ Runeblade of the Maldraxxus Paragon

  • One-hand model

  • Green glow instead of domination-blue

  • Close to Frostmourne’s silhouette but feels wrong due to color and proportions

❌ Slayer of the Lifeless / The Devouring Cold

Beautiful updated model

Great blue runes

Can be sheathed on the back

But again… one-handed

It wants to be a 2H runeblade - and it would be perfect as one

❌ Icy Ebon Warsword

Two-handed, yes

But outdated “cartoonish” proportions

Does not match modern DK armor fidelity

Feels like a relic of early WotLK, not a contemporary runeblade

These weapons show that Blizzard is trying to touch the fantasy… but they keep landing just short of it.

Meanwhile, Shadowmourne proves Blizzard CAN do it

Shadowmourne is:

High quality

Has modern fidelity

Has runic animations

Has a soul-steal effect players STILL talk about

Is made from Frostmourne's fragments

Is fully obtainable

It is the perfect example of a modern DK weapon.

Blizzard clearly knows how to make a runeblade that feels powerful, iconic, and class-defining.

So why stop there?

What DK players are asking for

We are NOT asking for Frostmourne itself. We are NOT asking to dual-wield it. We are NOT asking to break lore.

We’re asking for Blizzard to give DKs the same treatment every other iconic class gets:

  1. A modern 2H runeblade
  2. Domination-blue glow options
  3. A cosmetic “Echo of Frostmourne” / “Remnant of the Lich King”
  4. Updated runeforging visuals
  5. A soul-stealing weapon illusion like Shadowmourne’s effect
  6. A runeblade cosmetic pack, like Druids/Warlocks/Paladins received

None of these break lore. All of them enhance class fantasy. All of them follow existing Blizzard precedent.

Closing Thought

Death Knight fantasy revolves around the runeblade. Not axes (even though one meme axe is rewarded during the starting campaign, but they at least have runes on them). Not generic swords. Not recolors of Fury Warrior weapons.

A class built on cold steel and domination magic deserves at least one modern, iconic, class-defining runeblade transmog.

Blizzard has already shown - repeatedly - that they are willing to give players access to legendary weapons from Warcraft history.

It’s time Death Knights got the same treatment.
