30M/40M, need advice regarding repeating patterns.
Myself (30M), and my "friend" (40M). We were friends/coworkers for a while, but then had a fallout. I tried to mend things, which only worsened the situation. He blocked me everywhere as a consequence (his word), for trying to reach out to him. He is very conflict avoidant, and likes to brush things under the rug and pretend it didn’t happen. He’s done this with other friends in the past
1 year after the conflict, I left that job. Around the last month before leaving, since I had stopped trying, he very slowly started coming around, but by that point I had a lot of resentment built up over trying again and again, and being treated poorly. So, I just ignored him.
I took some time off and realized after leaving that I had feelings for him. After I left, in the past 3 years, we ran into each other maybe 3/4 times in total. This year, we ran into each other couple of times, and he approached me and we said hi, exchanging pleasantries. After his approach multiple times, i felt more confident. Anyway, his birthday was coming up and I wanted to get him something.
Since I was blocked everywhere and he still worked at the same workplace we were at, I showed up there. We’ve run into each other there before, but the only difference was this time I approached him. He didn’t like that. He completely avoided me.
So, now I feel bad that I had a gift for him, and he didn’t even bother to hear me out once. On the other hand, I feel like I’m running into the same pattern of doing too much, while he is nonchalant. Also, my friend said that this whole thing feels like on his terms. So, if he is comfortable with it, then it’s ok. But if I do something, then it’s a problem. Her example was, the 3/4 times that he approached me, if I had approached him, then he would have been upset about that as well.
So, not sure how to feel about this.
