CASE STUDY: Whirlpool/KitchenAid KEBC208KWH0 Door Lock Failure Caused by Wrong Solenoid Installed (18 V vs 120 V)

I bought a hardly used KEBC208KWH0 double wall oven from a repair guy who said it was a warranty return. Unit looked almost new, but the lower oven had a door-lock error after running a short clean cycle test, and it wouldn’t unlock.

While stripping the oven for parts I found the root cause — and I’ve never seen anyone online describe this:

⸻

✅ Upper Oven Solenoid (Correct Part) White solenoid Stamped: • 4452224 • 18 VDC PLS • Dormeyer Products • Polarized latching solenoid

This coil runs on ~18 V DC and correctly toggles both directions when polarity is reversed (pushes OUT on one polarity, pulls IN on reverse). That’s how the KEBC208 latch system works.

⸻

❌ Lower Oven Solenoid (Wrong Part!) Black solenoid

Stamped: • 4451663 • 120V HWR PLS • Half-wave rectified AC latching solenoid

Mechanically identical but electrically completely different. This coil is designed for 120 V AC half-wave, not 18 V DC.

This explains the symptoms: • Coil only actuated in one direction • Would not latch back in when polarity reversed • Control board couldn’t sense lock/unlock • Oven threw a door-lock error and became unusable • Customer eventually got a full unit replacement under warranty

This absolutely matches the previous owner’s story.

⸻

🔍 Why This Happens

Whirlpool/KitchenAid used two visually identical solenoid assemblies:

• 4452224 — 18 V DC polarized latching

• 4451663 — 120 V AC half-wave latching

They bolt into the same bracket, use the same plunger, same switch stack, same everything externally. Very easy for a tech or refurb center to grab the wrong one.

Once installed in an 18 V system: • The 120 V coil won’t pull in hard enough • It won’t unlatch on reverse polarity • Board thinks door never locked/unlocked → fails the cycle • Oven gets condemned/replaced

⸻

🎯 Conclusion

If you ever see intermittent lock issues on these Whirlpool/KitchenAid models — especially KEBC/KEBS/KEMS or similar — check the solenoid stamp.

If it says:

18 VDC PLS → correct 120V HWR PLS → wrong coil for these models

This mismatch can 100% cause door lock errors and lead to unnecessary board replacements or complete oven swaps.

Hope this helps someone. There’s basically no documentation online about the voltage difference between 4452224 and 4451663.
