I’ve been critical of him in the past, and I can’t promise I won’t be in the future—but one thing he’s done amazingly well is mitigating the loss of Kraft. Not only with the returns of Watson (and now Reed), but also by the way in which he’s used Musgrave, FitzPatrick, and Whyle.
If you watch the Rams play, they don’t have any great TE’s individually, but McVay has a way of using their unique skillsets to effectively form one good TE, and LaFleur seems to be copying that blueprint. Musgrave’s downfield receiving ability, Whyle’s blocking ability, FitzPatrick’s short-pass reliability. You wouldn’t want any of these guys being your TE1 on a team, but when you pair these skillsets together and find ways to use them to your advantage, you essentially equal out to one (poor man’s) Tucker Kraft.
