Could Burt Reynolds have beaten Robin Williams if he played into the press more?

I read someone saying that Burt Reynolds publicly trashed Boogie Nights before it even came out and that was part of the reason he lost the Oscar. Was Williams always a lock or could Burt have edged him out if he really went on his own campaign? They both give stellar performances so I honestly think they’d be pretty even
