[TOMT]STORY OR NOVEL - unknown when published

humans are exploring a moon or planet far from its sun (unknown if sol) and find squid like aliens on an ice covered moon or planet. I think they are hypothesised to be a crash landed alien species that may have devolved themselves to survive, living in the ocean beneath the ice, travelling through tunnels made by...something hot? might be another alien animal, cant quite remember.
