Notre Dame only thinks that they were robbed because they were rated too highly in the first place

Discussion

I found this year's playoff dispute to be particularly interesting. Most years, the dispute is based off of something that happened on the field (e.g., FSU was left out for being 13-0, Bama last year was upset because they thought SoS wasn't valued enough, Miami was about to be frustrated that their H2h win wasn't valued over ND, etc.)

Notre Dame, by comparison is upset because of how the rankings changed. They claim that Alabama "not moving down" from 9 is an example of clear bias when BYU did. And I sort of get it, it must be very frustrating to be in the playoff all year and then get knocked out on seemingly no action. But that is a very weak case for being robbed because it relies on the committee's past rankings. The prior committee rankings are not some unbiased gospel handed down to us from on high, they are literally just ranks by the same committee. So to claim the same committee robbed you because they changed their own ranks from last week is extremely weak.

The fact of the matter is, Bama had the exact same regular season record as ND with a much tougher schedule. Then, they lost in the CCG, admittedly bad for the eye test, but softened by the fact that they beat that same team before and showed they can hang with them. ND's SOR is still weaker than Bama's, even counting the 3rd loss. Then, Miami has a near identical SOR to ND, but they beat them H2H. They obviously should be in over ND. ND's only argument over these teams is FPI, which has never been a determinant of playoff seeding. Ask Georgia in 2023 about their FPI.

The problem here is that ND never should've been ranked ahead of either team to begin with. The committee made a big mistake in the in-season rankings putting ND 1st at any time over these 3 teams. I get why ND is upset, because it's frustrating to think you're in, when you never were. But at the end of the day, the committee is not "biased against you" because they changed their previous rankings that they thought had you too high in the first place.
