How to set up dual monitors with only one working display port

My neighbor's computer has an HDMI port and a VGA port, but no matter what we do, we can't get the computer to use both monitors using both ports. The computer freezes every time we plug something into the VGA port while the HDMI is also plugged in, so I'm wondering if there's a way to use a dual monitor setup using the working HDMI port?
