Scorsese's jealousy of David chase
First off I love scorsese. Him and kubrick are my favorite directors. The goodfellas influence on sopranos is undeniable (tons of the cast even). But scorsese said he didn't like sopranos because it was suburban.
Ive always had a feeling this was bullshit. He's a deep cinema guy, no way he overlooks the greatest show of all time with such a superficial criticism. Also he produced boardwalk empire so he clearly doesn't deny the validity of the TV medium.
I recently watched Irishman and it's clear as day now that he secretely likes the sopranos. Themes of mafia decay and existentialism are strong throughout - but undeniably, first perfected by David chase. I was surprisingly impressed by The Irishman but its hard to deny the sopranos influence and the only explanation would be some type of creative rivalry. Maybe he feels chase ripped him off. I mean, Deniro and Pesci getting old in nursing homes is clearly Junior soprano influenced.
