Visiting York Minster: tickets, opening times & tower climb – what to know before you go
Planning a trip to York and trying to figure out how York Minster actually works in real life? Tickets, services, opening times, tower climb… it’s a lot for “just a church”, right? ⛪
I’ve put together a full, no-fluff guide to visiting York Minster, but here’s the short version:
What York Minster is actually like inside
- Huge, bright Gothic interior with a ridiculous amount of stained glass.
- The nave gives you that big “wow” moment, then you loop through the transepts, Chapter House, choir and Great East Window.
- The Undercroft Museum underneath has Roman remains and interactive bits, so it is not just endless stone and pews.
Tickets & prices (rough)
- Standard adult sightseeing ticket is around £20 (about €23 / $25).
- Kids (17 and under) go free with a paying adult, up to four per adult.
- York residents, York students and carers can usually visit without paying.
- Minster + Central Tower climb is around £26 adults (about €30 / $33), plus about £6 (€7 / $8) for kids for the tower part.
- Tickets are generally valid for 12 months, so you can pop back in later in your trip.
- Prices correct as of December 2025.
Opening times & services
- Mon–Sat: sightseeing roughly 09:30–16:00.
- Sun: sightseeing usually afternoon only, because the morning is full of services.
- There are daily services (morning prayer, communion, evensong), which can close off parts of the building for a bit.
- You do not pay to go in for prayer, to light a candle, or to attend a service.
Tower climb – worth it or not?
- Around 275 narrow spiral steps, no lift, timed groups.
- Amazing 360° views over York if you are fine with heights and a bit of effort.
- Not suitable if you struggle with steep steps, enclosed spaces or have heart/lung issues.
- If you want to do it, book a morning or early afternoon slot so you are not rushing at the end of the day.
Best time to visit to dodge the crowds
- Early on weekday mornings is usually the calmest.
- Late afternoon (an hour or two before last entry) can also be quieter.
- Summer holidays, weekends and Christmas market season are the busiest, especially late morning.
Accessibility & comfort
- Main floor, Chapter House and Undercroft are mostly step free or lift accessible.
- Tower climb is steps only and off limits for a lot of people.
- There are accessible toilets, baby change facilities and seating dotted around.
- Big suitcases / huge bags are not allowed, and there are bag checks at the door.
How long to allow
- Roughly 1.5–2 hours for the main cathedral + Chapter House + quick Undercroft wander.
- 2.5–3 hours if you are adding the tower or you like to read everything.
- Easy to combine with a walk on the city walls, York Castle Museum or the National Railway Museum.
