the tools big prop firms have that you don't (1000 hours + of A grade research into prop firms and how they win )
the one tool jane street has that you don't.
I used to think the big prop firms like Jane Street hired traders who had nerves of steel. I thought they were just better at self-discipline than I was.
I was wrong.
The reality
We have all been there. You hit your max loss for the day. You tell yourself, "I'll stop." But then you see a "perfect" setup. You take it. You lose. Now you are down 2x your max loss. You hate yourself.
The Data:
The pros don't trust themselves. So why do you?
• The Kill Switch: Institutional desks don't rely on willpower. They have automated "Kill Switches." If a trader hits their loss limit, the software locks them out. They literally cannot trade.
• Pre-Trade Controls: Before an order even hits the market, a computer checks it. Is it too big? Is the price too far off? If yes, the computer rejects it.
• No Override: The most important part? The trader cannot turn off the kill switch. It is non-negotiable.
The "smart money" assumes that humans are emotional liabilities. They design systems to protect the capital from the trader. You are trying to be the trader AND the risk manager at the same time. That is a conflict of interest.
The Solution:
You need to build your own kill switch.
-
Hard Stops: Call your broker. Ask them to set a daily loss limit on your account that locks you out. Do not keep the password to unlock it.
-
Automate Entries: If you can, use limit orders with bracket stops attached. Take the decision out of your hands once the trade is live.
-
Admit Defeat: Stop trying to have "iron will." Admit that you are an emotional risk and put up guardrails.
I have a guide on how to set up "poor man's automation" for retail accounts on my profile.
