Cyclic stick configuration for helicopters with autotrim

When it comes to helicopters, a lot of people recommend to remove the springs from the stick since helicopters have no natural centering force. While this applies to regular helicopters, I'm wondering about the best setup for modern helicopters with autotrim like the H145.

If I understand it correctly, when holding down the trim release button, the cyclic behaves more or less as in a regular helicopter. However, when the button is released, the stick will return to the position where it has been released.

It's obvious that this behavior cannot be recreated without FFB. But since many of us (including me) have no FFB stick, what would be the most realistic way to mimic the behavior?

I basically see two options:

  • Use springs (probably light ones) and pretend that the physical center is the autotrim center.
  • Remove the springs and pretend the stick returns to the last position.

The first option is also how trim release is usually implemented in most sims, but the stick would always return to the physical center. The second option is probably more natural when trim release is pressed, but there is the potential problem that it could be hard to find the last position when not pressing trim release.

What is your opinion? Do you have other suggestions?
