How do you decide who goes off work when a child is sick?

Just curious what other people’s methods are with this. My 3yo hasn’t actually been off sick for months since starting her new nursery thankfully but woke up this morning with a temperature so she isn’t allowed to go in. She also won’t be allowed to go in tomorrow until at least 1pm as they require 24 hour clearance of a temperature without medicine. Bit of a ball ache, but probably also the reason this is her first illness since being there.

The way we do it is based on salary alone. Childcare leave for me and my husband is unpaid, we don’t have any friends or family who can look after her as they themselves are working or they live too far away, so I always take the time off. When I take it off we lose £100 a day, when he takes it off we lose £200 a day. Just seems like a no brainer to me but I also don’t particularly care about my job, I already work part time and it’s a big corporate job where nobody gets left with my backlog because it’s all shared work anyway.

I’m curious about how other parents decide to do it. I know our way might not be the most popular way but at the end of the day if this kind of leave was reimbursed or covered in some way we wouldn’t have to do it.
