I Miss when William wasn’t a mad scientist
Pretty cold take I know, but I started thinking about it again while trying to write my own FNaF timeline.
I don’t mind the sci fi nature of SL or anything, but William’s motivations and goals from SL onward make him a lot less scary or compelling.
What made him and FNaF’s story scary was how easily it could happen in real life. A man whose motive was as simple as “I want to murder and hurt children.” He could be your neighbour, he could be your dad’s work friend. William was a normal man who worked as a children’s entertainer who harboured an intense desire to hurt children. This is a thing that happens IRL and it made him scary and real.
I feel like Scott saw that FNaF was being consumed mainly by kids and wanted a way to make his villain more “kid friendly” so his motives were changed to the cartoonishly evil ones he has now. A man who wants immortality and uses specially designed robots to capture kids where he then experiments on them using fear gasses and illusion disks. He’s less real, he’s a cartoon villain, a moustache twirling evil super villain mad scientist.
I really like his depiction in DBD and recent media as a showboating theatre kid, someone who acts childish and throws tantrums when things don’t go his way, but I really hate how he’s just become some comic book supervillain who experiments on kids to make himself a god or something
