Analysing ONE OF THE MANY messages sent by Yudhisthira to Hastinapur through Sanjay.

THE MESSAGE -

In essence, Yudhishthira tells Sanjaya: "Go to Hastinapur and greet everyone in my name — from the highest to the lowest — and enquire about their welfare. Tell them I am well and wish them peace.”He lists literally dozens of categories of people to be individually greeted:

* Brahmanas, ascetics, aged citizens
* The royal priest, Ritwijas, preceptors (especially Drona, Kripa, Bhishma)
* Dhritarashtra (the blind king) and even Shakuni, Duryodhana & Dushasana (whom he openly calls wicked, ignorant, and vicious) and karna (whom he refers to as capable of deluding the already deluded one)
* Allies
* Minor kings and tribal chieftains who joined the Kauravas
* Ordinary citizens, traders, officers, accountants, doorkeepers
* Vidura (the only one on the Kaurava side he truly trusts)
* Elderly women, mothers, wives, daughters-in-law, young brides
* Maid-servants, hunchbacks, the lame, the blind, the crippled, the poor, orphans, refugees — literally the most marginalised people in the kingdom.

He ends with a subtle but powerful line:
“Tell the warriors Duryodhana has assembled that there are none equal to them on earth. But virtue (dharma) is eternal, and virtue is my real power for destroying my enemies.”

THE PURPOSE-

▪︎If u notice he showered praise and affection on his well wishers (Bhishma, Drona, Vidura, Kripa,etc.).By showing respect to his wellwishers he pulled them emotionally away from Duryodhan.

▪︎In the same breathe Yudhishthira openly calls out Duryodhana and Dushasana wickedness — a calculated insult that is nevertheless wrapped in formal courtesy.This is “ritualised aggression”: strong enough to satisfy his own party that he is not weak, restrained enough to preserve the moral high ground.

▪︎Yudhishthira’s long lost of greetings to everyone in the kingdom even during such a distressing situation is - To show he is still the rightful king in spirit
Even though he has no throne, he behaves exactly like a true king should – he remembers and cares for every single subject, high or low. A real king’s duty is to protect everyone; he is proving he never stopped doing that duty.

IN MODERN TERMS-

●Inclusive Stakeholder Engagement & Emotional Intelligence
He deliberately includes every single segment of society — top to bottom. This is pure “360-degree leadership” and “servant leadership.” He is signalling: “Even if war comes, I see and care about every human being in your kingdom — not just the elites.”

●Reputation Management & Moral High Ground
By publicly greeting even his bitter enemies (Duryodhana, Dushasana, Shakuni, Karna) with formal courtesy while still calling out their wickedness, he is documenting on record that he tried peace till the very last moment. If war happens, no one can say Yudhishthira was arrogant or vindictive.

●Soft Power & Psychological Operations (PsyOps)
Greeting the poor, disabled, servants, and women in the palace creates cognitive dissonance inside the Kaurava camp. This small act of care would have created cognitive dissonance… and likely eroded internal cohesion.

●Brand Positioning as the Dharmic Leader
The final line about “virtue being my power” is values-based leadership. He is winning the narrative war before the shooting starts.

OUTCOME-

Did This Help Him?Yes — enormously, but not in the way he hoped.

* Short-term (peace negotiations): No. Duryodhana rejected peace anyway. The war happened.
* Long-term (legitimacy, morale, and history): Absolutely decisive.

CHARACTER- This small message tells 3 huge things about his character-

* He never confuses the sin with the sinner. He hates Duryodhana’s greed and cruelty, but he does not hate the Kaurava people or even most of the Kaurava soldiers.
* He never forgets he is a king even when he has no crown. A true king’s duty is to protect and care for every single subject (high or low, friend or enemy). He is still doing that duty.
* His real strength is not his army — it is his dharma (virtue). That is why he ends with the line: “There are none equal to their warriors on earth. But virtue is eternal, and virtue is my power for the destruction of my enemies.”
