Grandmaster sailing quest
Excuse the very long story I’m about write but it’s something pertaining to sailing that I can’t stop thinking about—a grandmaster quest which gives you access to the underwater city of Atlantis. Here is a concept I thought up recently:
“Trident of the Abyss - The Search for Atlantis”
To start the quest, you speak to an old sailor at a high level port (87+ sailing required), who tells you about whispers of a lost, underwater city. He eventually sets you off on a journey to discover the Medallion of the Abyss, an ancient amulet which is said to guide/pull its wielder to the lost city. Upon finding the medallion, you prepare for your journey. A sloop will be required, outfitted with high tier boat parts and a crew that will help you navigate through your journey across the sea.
As you set sail and begin to get closer to the lost city, the medallion starts to glow brighter. This eventually causes the ocean to become angry, while the atmosphere around you turns stormy. You must dodge dangerous whirlpools and lighting clouds as you try reaching your destination. Once you arrive to the location where you believe the lost city should be, there is a cutscene which shows the medallion glowing as bright as it has since you set sail. A beam of light shoots into the sky, causing the storm clouds to split and disperse. However, the medallion suddenly stops glowing and goes dark.
You and your crew mates are confused, wondering what’s next. That’s when a huge Kraken appears, emerging from the depths, trying to capsize your sloop. This will be the first boss encounter of the quest and the first time you can battle a boss while sailing. After bringing the Kraken down to a certain health point, it clings to your sloop, dragging you and your crew underwater and leading into another cutscene. Just when all hope seems lost, the Medallion of the Abyss begins to glow bright once more and a teleportation vortex appears. You, your crew—and even your sloop—are sucked through the vortex.
Still in the cutscene, you awaken from your unconscious state to a crowd of guards and servants surrounding you and you quickly realize you’re in a palace. You ask, “What is this place?” and discover you’ve reached Atlantis. One of the king’s royal guards tells you the king would like a word, so you walk to the kings throne room. Upon meeting the king, he asks you how is it you found their hidden city.
Confused, you say, “Hidden? Atlantis was always said to be lost, not hidden.”
The king laughs and says, “Did you really think Prifddinas was the only hidden city in Gielinor?”
He then explains how they hid away Atlantis in order to protect the rest of Gielinor from evil beings who wanted to steal the city’s pulsating Abyssal Heart—an artifact tied to the Elder God’s, which, when in the wrong hands, could cause Gielinor’s destruction. Atlantis is indeed underwater, but it is cloaked by a magical bubble which makes it nearly impossible to find. The bubble allows its occupants to walk and breathe normally, just like you would on Gielinor’s surface.
Again the king asks how you found Atlantis. You tell him you were guided here by “this”, pulling out the Medallion of the Abyss. The king and onlookers gasp and start whispering. The king’s advisor proceeds to explain how the medallion you’re holding once belonged to Poseidon’s daughter, Irene, saying it was stolen from their chambers long ago. The king tells you how the city had begun to shake moments before you arrived and that it must’ve been Poseidon sensing the return of the medallion.
After some more dialogue during a very long cutscene, the king eventually tells you that Poseidon has become angry with all the recent sailing activity (referencing the new skill in a somewhat funny way, since this is purposely illogical—sailing would have been around for ages, even though the skill just released in game).
You ask what threat Poseidon poses and he tells you that his rage, not only puts the Abyssal Heart in jeopardy of being destroyed, but it could rise to the surface and destroy all of Gielinor. You ask what can be done and the king says, “If you help me and my kingdom defeat Poseidon, I will make sure you get back to Gielinor’s surface safe and sound.” You agree and go off on the 2nd half of your journey.
Without making this too long, you eventually battle Poseidon and after defeating him, the quest is completed. Quest rewards:
-100k sailing exp -Access to Atlantis -Medallion of the Abyss (teleport to Atlantis) -Access to post-quest Poseidon boss -Access to post-quest “at sea” Kraken boss -Abyssal fabric roll (creation of Abyssal flag)
If you like this idea, help me come up with potential rewards/drops Poseidon and the at sea Kraken could give, that wouldn’t disrupt the power balance in game too much and actually fit in with gameplay. I’m interested to see what people can come up with. Also, I was thinking that one of the facilities Atlantis could have is an Aquatic Farming Guild (80+ farming required) where you could grow kelp and other underwater plants to create potions related to sailing. There would also be a new slayer dungeon, where potions created using the new aquatic plants would only work while in the dungeon within Atlantis.
