Never been to a club. Can someone explain how it works

As the title says, I've never been to a clubx before. My closest one would be kipparing. Not sure how it all works. You pay an entry then just go sit down on a couch or something? Or do you pre plan it with someone? Clearly inexperienced with the whole experience.
