I (M31) am not sure how to comfort my girlfriend (F31)?

Some context: i know my girlfriend for close to 10 years but started dating a year ago and have been in a long distance relationship since the beginning. We live in the US which by itself is not an important fact but later in the post it might make sense as to why I mentioned this.

To the question, my girlfriend assumes that the worst possible outcome in every scenario is the most likely outcome, something she’s told me herself. This week ive taken time to be with her and i feel that when she’s in a stressful situation i dont know how to comfort her. I feel like i dont have the required emotional intelligence. To give an example: today she was going through her social media feed and inadvertantly came across news about a new measure the administration has taken to reduce the working hours of nurses. It really bothered her (she’s in the medical field as well) and was saying that she wishes there was a country that just comprised of women and how every man irritates her (she sees the reduction of working hours of nurses as an attack on women by reducing their hours of work). TBH I felt that was not the right way to look at it but I also felt that she’s justified to feel how she wants to. I really didn’t think it’s my place to comment on this because I felt that as a man commenting on this issue might not be valid. We were just sitting silently when she asked me if there is nothing I can say to comfort her or balance her thoughts. I mentioned that I agree with her that currently things really are bad and that on the topic of men I feel like I should not be saying anything. We went back and forth for a bit but at the end of it, she was crying and just feeling miserable. She said confirming to me that the world is not a great place right now , how will that comfort me - a fair question but I really don’t know what to say.

Im writing this looking to get help or some answers, I don’t know how to be there for my partner even though i really want to.
