Recommendations for DIY recording at home

Like many of you probably, I don't have any equipment to make a quality recording. But I have a smartphone with an audio recording function and my own creativity. I tried to simulate a home made recording booth by putting my phone onto a wardrobe shelf and then sing into it. Do you guys figured out other tricks or tips that helped make decent recordings with minimal equipment?
