The Lore of The Long Dark

Discussion

You may have already seen my post about how grim the world of The Long Dark is, but I’d like to delve into deeper aspects of the lore. I’ve divided this post into 5 topics that intrigue me the most.

  1. Methuselah Of course, you’ve always wondered who he is and how he knows everything. At first, I thought he was God, but after replaying the story, I believe he might be the soul of the island or the embodiment of its nature. It’s as if he’s guiding you to your final rest, emphasizing one truth: Nature has always been stronger than humans. Just think about it—why does Mackenzie see him? Is it hallucinations, delirium, or something more? Why specifically Mackenzie? Is it because he’s an unwelcome guest(Interloper)?
  2. The Darkwalker This is literally death. It has no body, no mind, nothing more—it’s just something that will reach you in a month, a year, or 80 years. Sooner or later, it will catch up to you. Imagine being in the shoes of that fugitive, running from death. You can’t stay in one place for too long, or it will take you. And all around you is eternal darkness and corpses…
  3. Challenges I’m not entirely sure, but I think I’ve heard that the challenges are stories of other survivors. Just imagine yourself in the place of any of them—for example, “As the Dead Sleep” or “Hunted”, where you’re first mauled by a bear and then relentlessly pursued. No matter where you go, it’s always nearby.
  4. Notes… Reading them, you can’t help but imagine how these people died. The messages where people regret their foolishness and realize they’re about to die are especially heartbreaking.
  5. DLC (Tales from the Far Territory) From the DLC, we learn about Rüdiger’s machine, which literally burned out brains and, if not causing the First Flare, may have brought it closer. At the end, we don’t find the body of the foreman who killed Rüdiger. As we know, the events with Rüdiger occurred before the First Flare. The foreman also began showing signs of the illness, and Astrid was transporting some kind of medicine—in a locked suitcase, no less. I suspect all of this might be connected. After all, even the trader on the radio mentioned that the Aurora affects the brain in some way. Could it be that the Aurora manifests itself in the form of Methuselah?

I’d be glad to hear your thoughts on this.
