Your IRL Office moments
As unrealistic as it may seem, The Office has moments I think many of us have experienced at work. I’d find it funny (and maybe therapeutic?) if we could share episodes that could really be part of The Office.
In my case, we had kind of a Dwight. He really loved Battlestar Galactica and used to show the boss how loyal he was by snitching on other employees (like literally hacking their computers to find compromising information). One day he really asked us if we thought a bear could defeat a hippo. Maybe not a bad guy, but very lonely and jealous… Ok maybe not a good guy.
I think I was Oscar, the annoying “yes but actually” guy, trying to prevent my boss from doing silly and sometimes illegal stuff. He appreciated that but sometimes called me “boooring”. Shoot, does that make me Toby?
My boss was spending much time in his office, pretending to work while we could see the reflection of his screen (he was gaming). When he was bored, he would walk around the office, trying to catch attention and sometimes spanking men (can’t do that to women, that would be sexist, right?). Really a nice guy but unfortunately a pathological liar, which made a lot of people quit, when they weren’t fired for imaginary reasons. The ironic thing is that he himself loved The Office, quoting “that’s what she said” as a joke. The problem is that… he was actually behaving like Michael Scott. I’m not mentioning the racist remarks in front of clients.
We had a few female workers but they didn’t last (that’s what she said??) as the environment was sexist. One almost had a heart attack after overworking weeks in a row. She had to deal with the boss’ emails and it was quite taxing.
Oh and our HR just left because he was tired of lying when there were inspections. That poor Toby was dead inside…
— tldr & Context: I worked for eight years in a company ran by an avatar of Michael Scott: terrible at management, narcissistic and hurting people every day… and yet rather lovable, and considering his employees family.
