Traveling with MIL
We just got back from our first long trip with my MIL, my husband and our 10 month old baby. The trip went fine overall and no arguments or big issues arises, but my MIL’s unsolicited parenting advice drove me crazy. She constantly made comments about baby being too cold even when we were in 80 degree weather. And then when I said something about her being too hot because she was literally sweating from her head, she said “it’s ok, this is how they learn to be stronger.”
On the plane, she insisted on holding her and would literally grab her from me while she was crying because she thought she could calm her down during the flight. It made me feel like she doesn’t think I could handle my own child. She constantly told us not to feed her certain things that are not good for her throat or her health, but then would give her apple juice and ice cream. It feels like I am in a microscope and everything I give or do with my baby is constantly being judged. There have been so many times when I have told her “let’s feed her” and she literally says “give her to me, I can hold her and feed her myself.” Shes so stubborn and refuses to ask for help even when shes clearly struggling, because she wants to show off that she “can do it”. She literally almost got hot tea on my baby when she was trying to hold her and drink it at the same time. She never wants to admit when she needs help or can’t do something.
Don’t get me wrong, my MIL is very helpful and she’s the reason my husband and I were able to do a lot of stuff together while on vacation. But the constant demeaning comments and hypocritical behavior just irks me. Anyone else have a similar experience? How did you handle it?
I am trying to learn how to let things go, but some actions/words are just so hurtful.
