Be careful with getrecall.ai online reviews

I was intrigued by Recall (getrecall.ai) and decided to pay for a month. The system itself works pretty well and has several features. I could see it being used as an AI knowledge base you build for yourself. However, I decided against using it, for these reasons:

A. Development seems to have been based on features rather than solid implementation. So there are bugs around. Some examples:

  • Linking to the wikipedia-page for the TV-show "Pluribus" gave me the summary for the wiki-page "Pluribus". So summary was collected based on keyword, not the actual link.
  • The AI-bot will sometimes scrape only parts of the webpage you provide. For example, I provided a page with text + table and only the table was captured.
  • Multi-language support is so-so. There is a setting to set translation to always be on, but chatting with the AI bot it will still answer parts in foreign language even though translation is on.
  • Using Firefox their extension does not work nor show on all pages, so the "augmented browsing" usefulness in practice is pretty low.

B. Exporting my data, I only got the data generated. Meaning any files I had uploaded were not exported. This means that you can't do a full export, and Recall should really not be used as any kind of long-term storage. Their privacy policy state "We support exporting your saved content", which is clearly false (at least through automated export).

C. What annoys me most however, are the many fake posts praising Recall available online, on communities such as Reddit. They are fairly easy to spot, for example they usually:

  • Link to Recall but not the competition
  • Position the strengths using specific keywords
  • Use promotional language This to me shows Recall as an unserious company, not one I want to trust with my data nor money.

D. I submitted three bug reports using their online form and email. One was never answered to (five working days later), the two others were acknowledged but have not been corrected (which may still come, it has only been a week). So while available, customer support was not great.

Alternatives I'm currently trying fabric.so though that has its shortcomings as well (for example no Firefox extension), will see if I stick with it or not. There are plenty of other alternatives (like mem.ai) but few that offer both Android app as well as Firefox extension. Capacities.io looks good as well but is less focused on AI.
