Question for the cashiers

Do you guys have to ask for your break? I’m a new hire so I’m not sure if this is standard but if I don’t remind my manager she never tells me when I can go on break or doesn’t bring a second cashier / backup if I don’t tell her I want my lunch / break. It just kind of feels annoying when the lines get really long and I’m having to wait until I see my manager so I can ask for it, like up to half an hour after I thought I should’ve gotten it, this normal ?
