AITAH autism edition. Why do I need to make an appointment with my parents?
Standard disclaimer “Unpopular opinion but an adult still living at home with their birth family doesn't owe you an explanation for why they're living there. It could be an illness/disability they have that's not fully visible. Maybe they want to be around to care for their aging parents. Maybe the rents in their area are so disgustingly, astronomically high that it really doesn't make sense for them to move out. Maybe they just don't trust strangers enough to move into shared accommodation.” Understood… great than we can begin.
My step mother falsely assumed I sent an invite to a follow up doctor’s appointment to my father.
Father (71) step mother (61)
While it still confuses me that I (40M) can’t go to my doctors appointments by myself, I had told my parents about an upcoming doctor’s appointment to discuss results of a blood test and the state of my infusions (Crohn’s)
My father at the time invited himself, so he could also ask about me potentially going on GLP-1 meds (his idea, his suggestion not mine)
Now both of them being retired and still immensely busy, also given that it is nearing the end of the year and holiday season (thank god) my father still has business meetings and they occasionally have end of year parties and so on. I never know their entire schedule and neither should I.
We have dinner almost every night together, they talk I eat. They talk about people I will never meet and have no interest in, the dumpster fire that is the world, investments and deals and it bores me to tears.
Something obviously came up, and he now can’t make it, I of course am elated because I can go to my own appointment but he gave me a bunch of questions to ask, which by me asking would imply I want the weight loss meds and I don’t, I have friends that are on it, I see the former overweight, mainly female celebrities who use to be all about body positivity and now look like Halloween decorations, I have heard it’s horrible nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea and I have had no pain from my infusions for the last 3 months being in clinical remission for Crohn’s.
I know they care, but I wish there was another way, instead of being on my back.
And the appointment false assumption thing, I remember being in school, around 1994-95 and being tasked with setting up a Hotmail email address, one I still use to this day. As my dad use to work for a telecommunications company he was forced to start one that he uses, and to this day it is not compatible with Hotmail, thus a lot of invitations fall through the cracks. I would have thought telling someone, face to face, would have been all the confirmation you needed, but NOW IT HAS TO BE IN WRITING? Talk about take the man out of the business but not the business from the man.
