Do French curl braids damage your real hair?

I was wondering if they damage your real hair?

I'm a bit paranoid about my hairline and losing my edges so I try to avoid high tension hairstyles, in fact I've been natural nearly this whole year, but I really want to try French curl braids at least once (as pictured below)

I just feel like this hairstyle is sooo beautiful !!

People who wore them, what do you think? Is it okay once in a while, or is the damage too great?
