Valide wasn't The Queen everyone makes her out to be
She's just like Mahidevran when it comes to owning up her decisions. I'm thinking of this glaring example:
Suleyman has just found out that Valide tried to marry off Hürrem during his absence. He confronts her about offering her to Lala Pasha's son and her response?
"Lala asked me if she was available. I told him we would think about it later, when you came back. After we found out about the pregnancy, we closed the subject."
Not only is this a blatant lie, it doesn't even make sense. How would Lala even know that Hürrem existed? It's not like the names of concubines were public knowledge until they gave birth to a royal child. And since when do Pashas ask for concubines from the imperial harem? It was an honor to be offered one, but it's not something you ask for.
If Valide were the Queen everyone makes her out to be, she would've owned up to it. She would've said something like:
"As you well know, we often offer concubines in marriage to our public servants. Until we learned about Hürrem's pregnancy, she was just another concubine. I am the head of the harem and it was within my prerogative to marry her off. And if you want to know the reason, it's because she was starting fights with other concubines and disturbing the peace in the harem. I understand that you care about her, but I am your mother and I have a job to do, which is managing your harem."
