[IIM Ranchi Student] The harsh truth about PI prep (that nobody tells you)

General Discussion 😀

CAT is over. Score calculators khul gaye, percentile guesses start ho chuke. But if you think a high percentile automatically converts to an IIM seat, that’s not how this game works. In most IIMs, PI/WAT and your profile together often carry weight comparable to or even higher than the CAT score in the final merit list.

Posting this as someone currently at IIM Ranchi, who has just been on the other side of this process and seen what actually matters.

  • Your CAT score is just the entry ticket. For many IIMs, PI alone can have 30–50% weight (e.g., IIM C gives 48% to PI, IIM B and several others also have a heavy PI component), so a weak interview can absolutely kill a strong CAT.
  • “Shortlist aane ke baad dekh lenge” is a trap. Shortlists drop mid-Jan and interviews run Feb–March, while solid prep for HR answers, acads, current affairs, and mocks easily needs 6–8 consistent weeks. By the time mails come, most serious candidates are already in full-fledged practice mode.
  • Copy-paste answers are a rejection magnet. Panels are testing clarity of thought, self-awareness, and whether your story is coherent with your academics, work-ex and goals, not how fancy your “Why MBA” sounds. If a coach can give the same answer to 50 people, it will sound fake in the room.
  • Buzzwords can’t hide weak basics. Candidates mug up frameworks and trending topics but fumble on simple questions from their own graduation subjects, projects, or work-ex, which kills credibility instantly. You are expected to know your own resume and core field better than anything else.
  • Scrolling news ≠ being “aware”. The panel checks if you can explain an issue simply, structure both sides, and take a reasoned stand under follow-up questions. Five topics deeply prepared beat fifty headlines half-read.
  • WAT (where conducted) and PI feed into each other. In several IIMs, WAT and PI together form a large part of the final composite score, and your ability to think and write clearly shows up again in how you speak. If you can’t structure a 200-word essay, structuring a 20-minute conversation will be hard.
